Dictatorship of Relativism
Bush use this phrase in his welcoming remarks to the pope. Of course, Pope Benedict used it first when he gave the homily at the conclave mass. It was like telling the Cardinals what he would focus on if they made him pope. They did and he did.
In debating this with people who think relativism is the opposite of dictatorship it becomes obvious how brilliant this phrase is. They complain that the pope has violated their absolute truth or tolerance by proclaiming another absolute truth of Jesus. It ties people in knots. It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.
The reality is that Pope Benedict has never demanded anybody change what they believe and teach. Many have demanded it of him. So why is he the intolerant one? Because he patiently and intelligently points out that relativism is self contradictory. That it offers no hope. That it leads to a society with no roots that can fall for any idea going. That is not demanding people change their thinking. It is just explaining why he is attracted to Catholicism and not to relativism. Others read his reasoning and want to embrace Catholicism as well. Not because of any coercion but because they are attracted to Jesus and the gospel. That is not just tolerating a person but loving them enough to offer them what you see at the most beautiful thing in life.
Love is always higher than tolerance. Hallmark does not print any “I Tolerate You” cards. They do print “I Love You” cards. The human soul does not desire to be tolerated. It desires to be loved. But the more we love a sinner the more we hate the sin. It is only natural to hate the sin that is destroying the one I love. So you suggest a better way. You don’t force them. You respect their freedom. Is that intolerance? Some would say so. I would call it love.

Another great post, thanks!
